Modern Wood Carving
Modern wood carving is an art practice that has been in existence for a long time. This type of wood carving is a long-standing component of the furniture industry. Artists such as Hap Sakwa, Ambass Austria, or Andrianna shamaris are among today's most well-known wood carvers.
Aron Demetz
Aron Demetz modern wood carving blends traditional techniques with contemporary materials, forming pieces of art that have a distinctive physical presence. His work is a combination of three techniques: carving as well as burning and then covering with resin to produce a reinterpretation of the material's texture as well as its spirituality. The human figures in his work are infused with strong moral and spiritual valences. their bodies and faces appear to have undergone an act of cleansing.
In this show the artist explores the entire process of research throughout his career. He has created sculptures that range from human-like figures, to small bozzetti which show the artist's artistic process. He was born in Val Gardena and chose wood sculpture as his preferred medium. Through his work he explores the possibilities of the material.
Michael Pacher
Austrian artist Michael Pacher combines wood carving and painting. He spent much of his life in the southern Tyrol region. His wood carving exemplifies the German Gothic style. His paintings are a reflection of the Italian Renaissance. His paintings were among the first to introduced artists from Germany to techniques used in Renaissance art. His most well-known work is his St Wolfgang Altarpiece. It is the largest European altarpiece.
The influence of northern Italian painting and sculpture is evident in the wood sculpture of Pacher that shares many resemblances with Andrea Mantegna. But, his fusion of Northern Gothic realism and Italian Renaissance styles has helped him develop a unique style of painting.
Jorg Zurn
A life-size wood carving of Archangel Michael created by Jorg Zurn was sold for $250,000 at an art exhibition in New York in 2002. Zurn was the oldest son of sculptor Hans Zurn the Elder. Jorg Zurn studied under his father and also trained in a variety of workshops in the southern part of Bavaria.
Zurn was Zurn was a German Baroque artist who carved altars as well as other items of the church. The five-storey High Altar of the Mother of God, featuring five stories, is one of Zurn's works. It is in the Church of Saint Nicholas (uberlingen). The style of the altar is sculptural and draws elements from early Baroque but is a dynamic design that is comparable to German Gothic sculpture.
Veit Stoss
Veit Stoss was a popular woodcarver. Many of his clients were from Europe and included Portugal and Italy. His sculptures featured massive carved figures and scenes from the lives of Christ and Mary. These sculptures reflect the passion of the late Gothic culture. Giorgio Vasari described his work as 'a wonder in wood.'
The boxwood model Veit Stoss created reveals an affinity with other great masterworks. It was made soon following the Cracow Crucifix. It's possible that it was made prior to or following the corpora of Nuremberg. The intricate design and intricate technique make it a fascinating object to investigate.
Veit Stoss’s Crucifixes are the most unusual kind of representation. They blend naturalistic observation with mannered exaggeration. Some scholars have speculated that Stoss was taught to carve athletic anatomy in Cracow and possibly observed doctors performing dissections.
Barbara Hepworth
Barbara Hepworth is one the most influential artists of her time. In the 1930s, she resided in a tiny house in St Ives with her friends. Despite her inability to cut the shapes she wanted, she worked on her drawings every night. Drawings were a means to express her thoughts in a way that she could not express in three dimensions. They were brimming with strings, colour and also hints at a mathematical harmony.
Hepworth was motivated by her early fascination with the natural forms and textures. Her love for landscapes was a major influence on her work later on. In 1943 she wrote that her sculpture was shaped by the landscape. Dissatisfied with the flat backdrops, she photographed her artworks in the natural surroundings.
